The most recent research from 2025 reveals that cannabis users under 50 are more than six times likelier to have a heart attack, with a 50% increased risk overall. SPECT brain imaging shows low blood flow is the #1 predictor of Alzheimer’s development, and marijuana use is directly associated with reduced cerebral blood flow. Meanwhile, nature provides safer, more effective plant-based alternatives that support the body’s innate healing capabilities without compromising optimal brain function or cardiovascular health.

The Biochemistry of Reduced Motivation and Mental Health

The research reveals disturbing patterns in how marijuana affects the brain’s reward and motivation systems. Long-term cannabis users tend to produce less dopamine, a chemical in the brain linked to motivation. Researchers found that dopamine levels in a part of the brain called the striatum were lower in people who use more cannabis and those who began taking the drug at a younger age.

One of the most consistent effects of cannabis on the heart is 20% to 100% increase in heart rate which can last up to 2–3 hours, often accompanied by a slight increase in supine blood pressure. This effect of cannabis on heart rate is thought to be due to cannabis induced vasodilation causing reflex tachycardia.

The reduction in cerebral blood flow creates a cascade of concerning effects. When the brain receives insufficient blood flow, it cannot maintain optimal function in areas responsible for motivation, decision-making, and emotional regulation. This biochemical disruption explains why many users experience apathy, reduced drive, and difficulty engaging in goal-oriented activities – what researchers call “amotivational syndrome.”

The Endocannabinoid System Disruption: Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoid compounds like anandamide and 2-AG that help maintain homeostasis. When external cannabinoids from marijuana flood these receptors continuously, the body’s natural production decreases. If the endogenous marijuana receptors are blocked 24-hours each day, day after day, we lose the ability to experience pleasure and become apathetic and depressed.

This creates a vicious cycle: users need increasing amounts to feel normal, while their natural reward system becomes progressively impaired. The result is a brain that struggles to find motivation, joy, or drive from natural life experiences.

Devastating Impact on Developing Brains

The potential mental health effects of cannabis are particularly alarming for young users (adolescents, teens, and young adults), whose brains are still developing. Studies have found numerous dangers of using cannabis during neurodevelopment, including:

• Disruption of the endocannabinoid system – interfering with the body’s natural balance mechanisms

• Interference with crucial brain processes – including synaptic pruning and neuroplasticity essential for healthy brain development

• Reduced hippocampal neurogenesis – leading to memory deficits and cognitive decline in the brain’s learning center

• Effects on neurotransmitter systems – disrupting the dopaminergic, glutaminergic, and GABAergic systems crucial for mood and cognition

• Structural and functional brain changes – particularly in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus regions vital for decision-making and memory

• Decline in cognitive performance – affecting attention, memory, and overall mental sharpness

• Risk for developing dependence – known as marijuana use disorder, creating cycles of escalating use

Cannabis use significantly boosts the risk for serious mental health issues, including psychosis and schizophrenia, as well as mood disorders such as clinical depression and anxiety disorders. Users frequently experience emotional dysregulation, finding it difficult to manage normal emotional responses.

Impaired Daily Function and Safety Risks

Cannabis inhibits normal functioning, interfering with everyday tasks. Studies warn that the drug impairs psychomotor skills, affecting coordination and attention. Cannabis can interfere with safe machinery operation for as long as 24 hours after usage, raising the risk of dangers like car or work related accidents.

Part 1: The Science Behind Brain Health and Blood Flow

Revolutionary Brain Imaging Reveals Concerning Patterns

Advanced brain imaging technology has provided unprecedented insights into how certain substances affect our most vital organ. The Amen Clinics, utilizing SPECT brain scan technology, has documented extensive evidence showing that using marijuana is associated with lower cerebral blood flow. Their research demonstrates that low blood flow has been observed through SPECT brain scans to accompany numerous mental health conditions and symptoms, including depression, suicide, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, traumatic brain injury, and substance abuse.

Most significantly, a study of more than 7,700 brain images found that vascular dysregulation within the brain was a key signal in the early development of Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, low blood flow (detectable by SPECT scan) is the #1 predictor that a person will develop this condition.

Published research in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), demonstrated abnormally low blood flow in virtually every area of the brain studies in nearly 1,000 marijuana users compared to healthy controls, including areas known to be affected by Alzheimer’s pathology such as the hippocampus.

The Hippocampus: Memory’s Command Center Under Threat

The most alarming finding centers on the hippocampus – our brain’s memory formation headquarters. The most predictive region separating these two groups is low blood flow in the hippocampus on concentration brain SPECT imaging. This work suggests that marijuana use has damaging influences in the brain – particularly regions important in memory and learning and known to be affected by Alzheimer’s.

Independent research from multiple institutions confirms these findings. Brain SPECT studies were performed on 30 heavy marijuana users compared to 10 control group subjects. The marijuana group demonstrated marked decreased activity in the right and left temporal lobes. This study demonstrates decreased cerebral perfusion in the temporal lobe regions of the brain on SPECT imaging from chronic marijuana usage.

Cardiovascular System Under Siege

The most recent research from 2025 reveals even more alarming cardiovascular risks. Findings presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session linked cannabis use with heart attacks through a comprehensive analysis. This research combined a study with more than 4.6 million participants and a meta-analysis of 12 previous studies involving over 75 million people.

The results are startling: cannabis users under the age of 50 were more than six times likelier to have a heart attack, compared to non-users. The meta-analysis showed that users had a 50% increased risk of heart attack.

The study also revealed that cannabis users had a fourfold risk of ischemic stroke, double the risk of heart failure, and a threefold risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke. Crucially, participants had no “significant cardiovascular comorbidities” such as high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, diabetes, tobacco use, or preexisting coronary artery disease.

In 2024, the Journal of the American Heart Association analyzed survey data from 434,104 U.S. adults from 2016 to 2020, finding that daily users had 25% higher odds of having a heart attack and 42% higher odds of stroke than non-users. Among men under age 55 and women under age 65, marijuana use created 36% higher combined odds for coronary heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.

The Biochemical Mechanisms Behind Blood Flow Disruption

Marijuana affects blood flow through several biochemical mechanisms involving the endocannabinoid system and cardiovascular receptors:

Primary Mechanisms

CB1 Receptor Activation: THC binds to CB1 cannabinoid receptors found throughout the cardiovascular system, including blood vessel walls. This activation triggers a cascade that ultimately leads to vasodilation (blood vessel widening) in most peripheral vessels, but the brain shows a different response.

Cerebral Blood Flow Reduction: In the brain, THC causes vasoconstriction of cerebral blood vessels through several pathways:

• Activation of CB1 receptors on cerebral blood vessels leads to decreased nitric oxide (NO) production

• Reduced NO availability means less vasodilation, resulting in narrowed cerebral arteries

• THC also affects adenosine signaling, which normally promotes cerebral vasodilation

Orthostatic Effects: Marijuana commonly causes orthostatic hypotension (blood pressure drop when standing) through:

• Inhibition of norepinephrine release from sympathetic nerve terminals

• Reduced baroreceptor sensitivity

• Direct effects on heart rate variability

Contradictory Systemic Effects

Interestingly, while cerebral blood flow decreases, marijuana typically increases heart rate and can cause peripheral vasodilation. This creates a paradoxical situation where the heart works harder while the brain receives less blood flow.

Endothelial Function: Chronic use may impair endothelial function – the ability of blood vessel linings to properly regulate blood flow through NO release and other mechanisms.

The research shows these effects are dose-dependent and can vary significantly between individuals based on tolerance and consumption method. The mechanisms are complex because the endocannabinoid system has both protective and potentially harmful cardiovascular effects depending on the specific receptors activated and the physiological context.

The Critical Connection: What’s Bad for the Heart is Bad for the Brain

Blood flow is critical for the human body—transporting nutrients, including oxygen, to cells while flushing toxins. The brain especially needs blood flow to function optimally. Though it makes up only 2% of a human’s body weight, it uses 20% of the body’s oxygen and blood flow.

Marijuana, and anything else that inhibits blood flow, will damage the heart and blood vessels—and inevitably harm the brain. The link between cardiovascular and mental health has been firmly established in the field of study known as psychocardiology.

Research in this field has shown that those with mental health conditions (including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia) are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, even at young ages. The relationship is bidirectional: People with cardiovascular disease are more likely to suffer from conditions like depression and dementia.

Cannabis use boosts the risk for mental health issues, including psychosis and schizophrenia, as well as mood disorders such as clinical depression and anxiety disorders. Protecting the blood vessels that feed the body’s neurons will boost not only heart health, but brain health, resulting in a sharper mind as well as improved mental health.
