My professional career was profoundly influenced by the catastrophic events of famine, malaria and cholera, which deeply affected me when I was a child. The desire to improve quality of life and provide better food and health care motivated me to pursue education and research opportunities to attain these goals. My career has evolved around two disciplines, agriculture and medicine, which I have tried to blend uniquely by pursuing discoveries of biologically efficacious molecules from natural and synthetic sources. The love for nature, respect of ancient wisdom and compassion for human health has attracted me to traditional medicines. Their exploration, understanding and evaluating their principles scientifically and their safe and efficacious use have become my lifetime mission. Inquisitiveness, curiosity and attaining excellence in all my pursuits have not taken second position to achieving practical goals. I am actively involved in teaching and research with educational institutions.

Two Ayurvedic Centers are established. One at 260 Ridgedale Ave, East Hanover, NJ, and another at 100 E. Sutton Place, Wilmington, DE. The mission of these centers are to promote Ayurveda. We already have a two years certificate course where students are given detailed instruction on the principles and practices on Ayurveda. Research projects include understanding the significance of oral chemical sensations and their influence on internal physiological and biochemical processes. Selected bitter, pungent and astringent spices were evaluated for their ability to modulate GABA receptor binding, inhibition of protein kinase C affecting transduction, and understanding stimulatory processes of glycemia in diabetes.

Research projects included discoveries of biologically active novel molecules from natural sources, plants and traditional medicines. Employing bioassays isolation of active ingredient(s) was monitored. Structures of these molecules were elucidated for agrochemical and pharmaceutical leads. Insect growth and development were studied and role of hormones and their analogs investigated. Novel insecticides were discovered employing unique bioassays for potential insecticides from which lead compounds were tested worldwide. Novel antiviral molecules were discovered from natural products, their structures elucidated, synthesis carried out, their utilities established and patented.

SPECIAL AYURVEDA PROJECTS (1982-present):
1. IN SEARCH OF MEDICINAL PLANTS:
Studied traditional health care systems and medicines, and led worldwide expeditions in search of medicinal plants and their uses in India and China during 1982, 1985, and 1987. In part, this knowledge has been the basis of several important leads in anticancer and antiviral research. Produced a documentary on “Ayurveda:
The Traditional Medicine of India,” which narrates a brief history of the principles and treatments of this ancient traditional medicine of Southeast Asia. Some 4,000 plants were collected and donated to universities in India, the Royal Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian Institution.
2. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AYURVEDIC AND WESTERN TREATMENT FOR LEUCODERMA (VITILIGO):
Leucoderma/vitiligo is a skin depigmentation disorder. In more than 85% cases bilaterally symmetrical white patches on different parts of the skin occur. Some cases have no bilateral symmetry. It is a cosmetic disorder of unknown etiology and no specific and well-documented genetics. On the basis that it may be a neuronal (bilateral) immune disorder (non-infectious) and learning more about it may provide insight into the study of Aids (HIV), a special study was conducted. More than 300 patients were examined. They also provided information on 200 disease-related questions. One major conclusion was that Ayurvedic treatments were more efficacious in achieving either partial or complete cure, while allopathic treatments were less or ineffective.
3. RADIAL PULSE: NADI:
Ancient traditional systems employ examination of radial pulse to determine the imbalance of body humors. This art is well advanced in Ayurvedic and Chinese systems of medicines, though physicians and healers of most all have used it, including modern Western and European doctors. In a special research project (1997) over 15 Ayurvedic colleges and centers were visited and Nadi examination protocols discussed with 60 Vaidyas. Vaidyas and I examined also Nadi of more than 150 individuals and patients. The study revealed that radial pulse examination can be used to determine the imbalance of classical three humors of Ayurveda, namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The subjective evaluation sensed by three fingers system can be supported by Doppler measurements. The study also provided subtle variations of peaks between systolic to systolic peaks. It was concluded that with further studies this method of diagnosis could provide valuable information of disease status non-invasively. Data from over 300 patients and healthy individuals have been collected.

5. SCHOLARLY EXCHANGES: AYURVEDIC TEACHERS AND PHYSICIANS: (1995 and 1998-99)
Several Ayurvedic physicians and scholars were invited from India under the auspices of Ayurveda Inc., University of Pennsylvania, University of Delaware, West Jersey Hospital and other non-profit organizations. Seminars, workshops and panel discussions were organized for 3 weeks in 1995 and 10 weeks in 1989-99. Principles and practice of Ayurveda were discussed and protocols of diagnosis and treatments of specific diseases elucidated. A more elaborate future exchange is under consideration, where a team of 10 Ayurvedic educators, scholars and physicians from India and United States will participate to exchange ideas on specific disciplines of Ayurveda.

SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Natural Products: Searched for biologically active novel molecules from plants, spices, traditional Ayurvedic medicines and marine organisms. The targeted goals were to discover leads for agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Tested over 6000 fractions of plant extracts and 350 medicines in specifically designed bioassays and selected biochemical pathways. The realm of testing for agrochemicals included: insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, senescence, drought resistance, plant growth regulation; and for pharmaceuticals included: inhibition of viruses (herpes, VSV, rhino, HIV, FLV, etc.), lymphokine activated killer cells, proliferation of macrophage, stimulation of natural and Immonomodulatory control of tumor cells, GABA-glutamate receptor binding, PKC inhibition, stimulation of CO2 production in adipose tissues, antibacterials, CNS, arthritis, etc. In monitoring these assays, active molecules were isolated, purified and their structures elucidated employing NMR, GC-MS, HRMS and X-ray analysis. A selected few were synthesized and analoged to optimize activities, and patent protection was obtained.
Insect Physiology. Discovered insulin-like activity and molecule from royal jelly and partially characterized the molecule. Studied juvenile hormone and ecdysone during metamorphosis; investigated their regulatory control of development and gene expression capabilities to synthesize DNA, RNA and proteins. Examined photoperiodic control of initiation and termination of diapause and studied its physiology and biochemistry. Isolated and characterized digestive proteases. Discovered Serotoninin in insect hemolymph and established its role in salivary gland fluid secretion mediated by cAMP. Investigated protein synthesis during metamorphosis and examined regenerative potentials of proteins in perfused insects. Studied heart rhythmicity, respiratory periodicity and blood biochemistry in stressed insects.
Insect Toxicology: Employing uniquely designed bioassays, screened 20,000 synthetic compounds, from which a new class of highly efficacious, safer to predators, photodegradable, insecticide was discovered. This novel insecticide was field tested worldwide with encouraging results. Evaluated synergistic toxicity of juvenile hormone and ecdysone for insect control, and tested analogs of juvenile hormone. Isolated 2 small
(<5000 Dalton) proteases from a bacterial pathogen and demonstrated their biochemical toxic mechanism. Searched for physiological and biochemical mechanisms of toxicity of chlorinated hydrocarbons and
Organophosphate insecticides and compared them with the effects of stress due to immobilization. Compared laboratory and field efficacy of DDT, BHC and related compounds on several crops in India.
Insect Taxonomy: Collected and identified 120 species from 10,000 specimens of microscopic thrips (Thysanoptera) from Bombay state during 2-3 year period; 2 were species nova.
RESEARCH PROJECT SUMMARIES:
My research interests and various projects are summarized below. Each project has advisory panel of highly qualified experts and consultants. In addition, there is a panel of 8-10 Ayurvedic physicians (Vaidyas) who I consult with for medicinal values of Ayurvedic preparations for its authenticity, safety and efficacy.
PROJECTS:
· Insect Feeding Inhibition (FI): Insects compete with man by devouring crops. Inhibition of their feeding may provide a novel control strategy. Bioassays were developed to monitor feeding. Employing these tests a very potent FI molecule has been isolated, purified, and its chemical structure elucidated. This molecule is more active and less complex than Azadirectin, and probably the most active insect feeding inhibitor known. I have obtained proprietary protection and the filing of the patent is in process.
· Antivirals – Herpes/Flu: I was able to isolate, purify and elucidate the structure of a highly active anti-herpes molecule from an African plant species. The compound was synthesized and analogs prepared to establish structure activity relationship. It is patented. It is about 50 – 100 fold more active than Acyclovir in vitro tests. NIH has confirmed my findings and has agreed to test my compounds in invitro and in invivo against related viruses. NIH will also participate in clinical evaluation.
· Antivirals – HIV: I have established in vitro antiviral activity against two HIV strains. Monitoring inhibition of HIV two components are isolated from a plant, which has also exhibited anticancer activity. These components are subjected to chromatographic purification resulting in significant gain in specific activity. NCI-NIH has independently confirmed my findings and have expressed desire to test active ingredients. Considerable progress has been made during last few months in elucidating the structure of one compound and filling of patent protection is initiated. One of the most potent fractions from Ayurvedic medicinal plant has been discovered. The plant has been used safely for thousands of years.
· FDA approval is being sought for clinical evaluation. This species is considered broad spectral antiviral as very high anti-hepatitis activity is exhibited by several fractions.
· Immunomodulator and Natural Killer Cell Stimulators: I have isolated five active components from two Ayurvedic medicinal plants, which are anticancer and are also used in rejuvenation therapy. These compounds modulate proliferation of macrophage and natural killer cells, which enhance destruction of target tumor cells. We have established these activities in invitro, in vivo and two of the fractions have exhibited tumor clearance activity in animals. These materials are being evaluated by NCI for broad-spectrum anti-tumor activities.
· Cataract Opacity Reversal: A non-surgical oral and a topical preparation made from 6 Ayurvedic medicinal plants reverse opaque cataract lens to normal eye transparency. The evaluation has been carried out in invitro, in invivo and clinically in humans. In vitro and in
· Vivo studies utilized UV radiation, Selenite and stereol models, while in humans it was tested against naturally produced cataract. It takes between 3-6 months for oral treatment to
produce satisfactory response. Chemical identity of six out of eight HPLC resolved compounds of a highly active fraction is determined. Patent protection and FDA approvals clinical evaluations are in progress. A business plan has been prepared to see alliances for anticipated commercialization.
· Protein Kinase Effectors: Protein kinase C is crucial in many biological phenomena e.g. transduction in cancer biochemistry, regulation of hormone action, neurotransmission, and ionic transport. I have established a strong inhibitory activity in 3 related (same genus) plant species. Monitoring inhibition of phosphoinositol induced activation of PKC; two chromatographic components with a high state of purity are obtained. This plant is found to have potent insecticide activity and I am in the process of establishing if insecticide and PKC inhibitory molecules have structural similarities.
· GABA-Muscimol Receptor Modulators: Employing rat and insect brain GABA-Muscimol receptor binding assays, 20 plants and traditional medicines used to treat mental disorders, were evaluated. Several plants exhibited inhibitory and few stimulatory activities. From one species a potent (100%) inhibitor has been isolated and purified. Its elemental compositions have been determined with HRMS, and structure is being elucidated. Another stimulatory (300 % of control) molecule is being isolated employing same receptor binding assay.
· Oral Hypoglycemic Agents: In search for an oral substitute for insulin, several traditional medicines and their constituent plants were tested. Plants used as oral antidiabetics were further selected. One mg of crude extract of one species metabolized glucose in adipocytes exhibiting 25u unit in vitro insulin equivalent activity. Preparations with neuropathic and vasculopathic properties and claimed to regenerate pancreatic islet cells are being investigated.
· Antibacterials: Foliage of a local plant species contains an antibacterial component. The evaluation of the activity was determined by measuring the kill zone radii produced by the crude extracts and purified fractions of test materials against, Staphylococcus epidermis, and Streptococcus aurealis. A semi-purified chromatographic fraction exhibited substantial antibacterial activity. Ayurvedic physicians to treat tuberculosis have used a related species of the same genus of the plant.
· Plant Cell Cultures: Numerous biologically active molecules or their precursors from natural sources are chemically complex. Often their chemical syntheses prove difficult or prohibitively expensive. Anticipating such difficulties we have developed plant cell culture capabilities and successfully produced
· Calluses and generated roots from leaf cells. Manipulating genetic constituents of the host cells and altering nutritional and hormonal milieus have achieved some measure of success to produce desired molecules.
· Harness, Amplify, transform Solar Energy in Windless wind mill model Initial studies were carried out to achieve project goals and different structural models were evaluated. Particular focuses were made on energy cost, pollution, global warming.
Natural products: A unique database has been generated for potential leads for Agricultural and Pharmaceutical industries employing 20 in house assays and literature information. The agrochemical screens are designed to discover insecticides, insect feeding inhibitors, insect growth regulators, herbicides, fungicides, plant growth regulators, senescence retardants, draught resistors, ions and transport facilitators, etc. The pharmaceutical screens to find leads for
CNS, arthritis, antiviral, antibacterials, anticancer, PKC inhibitors, immunomodulators, neuromodulators etc. The database also includes cataloging of medicinal plants and traditional
medicines not directly investigated by us. Crude extracts of many plants are available for investigations.
Non-Invasive Diagnostic Technology:
· An exploratory project has been conceived to design high tech radial pulse diagnostic (Nadi Pariksha) instrumentation to provide objective data to determine the basic constitution (Prakruti) of the patient. This project is considered crucial to evaluate Tridosha concepts of Vata, Pita and Kapha, the
basis of Ayurveda. Our objective is to generate sophisticated computerized database for a specific disease before, during and at the end of a treatment to objectively evaluate efficacy.

PM-AP Approach:
I am reintroducing the concept of ‘ Personalized Medicine’. It has been the tradition of Ayurveda to prepare medicine for a specific patient on the basis of his/her Tridosha Prakruti –basic constitution. As two patients are not alike their medication cannot be same for desirable effectiveness. Most all systems have some component of ‘Personalized Medicine’ on the basis of disease but the variations based on individuality of the patients are not taken into account. I am adding a new dimension to it. I have designated ours as PMAP (Personalized Medicine According to Ayurveda by Patel). Numerous factors, rationale and justification are considered in PM-AP. The details are reported in the chapter on ‘Ayurvedic Medicine in Cancer’, by N. Patel, in ‘Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Cancer ed. Marc Micozzi, Harcourt Pub. Essentially the medicines are selected from database and evaluated for their efficacy to unblock the energy in Meridians and Channels, (Nadis and Srotas respectively of Ayurveda). The final constituents of the formulation is suggested on their compatibility with Patient’s basic constitution (Prakruti) and pathogenesis of the diseases.
Frontiers of Healthcare:
My serious sickness of 2000 was instrumental to search for non-invasive diagnostics and personalized medicine. The search culminated to ‘Frontiers of Healthcare. It is applicable to most all ailments. It is scientific, evidence based and holistic. It incorporates best features of several medical systems. The approach is dynamic and has five modalities
1. Energy Meditation. You focus on specific areas of the brain (Somatotopic projections), energies them and move this energy to Cerebellum, and then to brainstem. From brainstem distribute the energy to ailing organs, which are cleaned and rejuvenated.
2. Energy water: Energies in the body is balanced and radionically transferred to water. This Energy Water (EW) then becomes PMAP (Personalized Medicine according to Ayurveda by Patel) and is evaluated by EAV (Electro Acupuncture according to Voll). Energy Water has resulted in Energy Medicine and is being investigated for its efficacy and mechanism of action.
3. Personalized Medicines: Using above instruments and techniques, specific medicines are selected from the database of thousands of Medicinal Plants, Compounded Medicines and Prescription Drugs. They are checked individually and in combination for efficacy.
4. Food and Diet guidelines: I consider ‘Food as medicine and Medicine as food’. Patients are educated and given guidelines for foods, which are evaluated for therapeutic values.
5. Exercise: Depending on the ailment and the patient’s need, specific exercises are suggested. I view exercise therapeutically important and along with physical involve Mind-Body components.
International Collaborations:
We are in the process of agreement with France, Germany and Argentina to have joint venture. Our efforts will be directed to promote IHP products, technology transfer, research and development of selected leads, obtain required (equivalent to FDA) approvals and commercialize them internationally.

objectives included evaluate Immunomodulators (IM) on Cancer and HIV patients, provide balancing of energies and Radionically transfer to Energy Water (EW), train patients to Energy Meditation, conduct free clinic camps (Sibirs). A total of five cities of Gujarat State, India were involved in this program. We evaluated and assisted some 2000 patients. As there was need and demand that we accept patients with all health complaints. We employed extensively EAV (Electro Acupuncture according to Voll) and employed PMAP (Personalized Medicines According to Ayurveda developed by Patel). The discoveries we made over last 20 years. were to enhance activity of Macrophage and Natural Killer Cells and augment body’s own immunity. These focused objectives were soon widened as the patients who came to seek help were not limited to
Cancer and HIV/AIDS. It was difficult to turn patients away, particularly some of them were children and many were poor. We had the equipment and I had with me over 700 Ayurvedic medicines, which we can evaluate for other ailments. So the modified mission broadened to help everyone who came to seek help. Also, I soon found out that who came for help had little or no financial resources. This compelled us not to charge. Some patients paid cost of the medicine but most received free. At this stage the number of patients increased and we were unable to evaluate each patient as thoroughly as I would have liked. Though what was evolving was acceptable. The compassion won over collection of scientific data. We had excellent support of college level volunteers from Sardar Patel Bhavna, a residential dormitory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat where we spent more time than other cities. Numerous talks and discussions were held at Universities, colleges and Ayurveda groups and subsequently more projects were planned for future.
